Gadgets
I love gadgets. Fancy clocks, weather reports, currency rates and much more. Just right click on the desktop and select gadgets. Choose the ones you want (you can have more than one of the same) and put them where you want.
If you want to see them all the time, then you need a program that will create a 'border'. I'm trying maxmax from kmtools.win-os.pl. It sits in the system tray by the clock and is fully customisable.
Icon management
Depending on your screen resolution you might find the icons on the desktop a bit big or small. Click the desktop, hold the Ctrl key and use the mouse scroll wheel to change the size of the icons.
I find it a great help to organise related icons into groups around the screen. Makes them much easier to find.
Two screens
This is the best! An even bigger virtual screen or two screens. Every version of Windows from XP onwards has multi-monitor support. All you need is two graphics outputs. With a laptop you already have a built-in screen and the ability to drive an external one. With a desktop, even a cheap graphics card has two outputs.
Plug in another monitor and off you go. In XP, right click the desktop, select properties and then the display tab. In Vista, right click and choose personalize, then display settings. For Win 7 right click and go to screen resolution.
